Shanghai Tower, located in the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone of Pudong, was awarded the "2016 Best Tall Building Worldwide" by the Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) at the 15th Annual CTBUH Awards Ceremony and Dinner held on November 3 at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, reported thepaper.cn on Wednesday.

According to the CTBUH, a total of 132 buildings from 27 countries around the world entered the final selection process.In all, four won Best Tall Building Awards, including Shanghai Tower, Best Tall Building Asia & Australasia; VIA 57 West, Best Tall Building Americas; The White Walls, Best Tall Building Europe; and The Cube, Best Tall Building Middle East & Africa.

In the citation, the CTBUH said the "Shanghai Tower shows the greatest commitment to communal space in a tall building since the Commerzbank Tower was completed in 1997. It contains the world's first truly 'inhabitable' double-skin fa?ade on a skyscraper, which is not only remarkable for its intended greenery, but its incorporation into the tower's overall ventilation strategy. The sacrifice of valuable floor area to realize this social amenity proves that the aspirations for Shanghai Tower went far beyond mere commercial gain."

In making its choice, the CTBUH takes a more comprehensive view of structures, not only structural performance, but also the positive effect they may have on people and cities.
