The Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, is set to build a new museum in northern Beijing in order to display a more extensive collection, said Chinanews.com on Monday.

Shan Jixiang, president of the Palace Museum, says currently less than 1% of the collections they have available are on display. As the Palace Museum houses the Forbidden City, it is a tourist destination, a museum, a cultural and an educational organization all in one, because the scope of the Palace Museum is so large, it has difficulty in finding space to display the extensive amount of collections they have available.

"For other museums in the world, about 10% or even 20% of objects can be displayed. However, for the Palace Museum, only nearly 0.5% can be displayed despite the several dozens of exhibitions held each year. To provide more fully, a new museum needs to be built," said Shan.

The new museum will be 25kms away from the Palace Museum and located in a culturally significant area, facing the Badaling Great Wall to the north.

At first the construction is projected to cover 125,000 square meters and will enable multiple collections to be displayed.

"We aim to build a green and low-carbon museum. The new museum will be the most harmonious museum we have built," added Shan.

The new museum will also be a digital museum. It will provide the history and current condition of yards and buildings through digital interaction. Visitors will also be able to imitate calligraphic of famous artists from ancient times.

The Palace Museum will also enlarge its display of collections. It is estimated that by 2020, 80% of collections available will be covered.

The Palace Museum regarded as one of the best museums in the world, along with the Louvre, the American Metropolis, the British Museum and St. Peter's Winter Palace.
