China says it hopes the Philippines' new government can return to dialogue when it comes to South China Sea disputes.

Foreign Minister spokesperson Hua Chunying suggests the Philippine's new government honor their commitments.

"We hope the new Philippine government will honor its commitments to the related consensus and return to the orbit of bilateral dialog and go toward the same direction with China, and properly handle the related disputes so as to contribute to a healthy and stable development of the bilateral relations."

The remarks came after the Philippines' incoming foreign minister said that bilateral talks between the Philippines and China could help untangle the disputes in the South China Sea.

Perfecto Yasay also noted "there is no other way" but to settle issues bilaterally.

Hua said China welcomes Yasay's statement and spoke highly of the bilateral efforts to manage disputes.

"Over the past more than 40 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations, leaders of the two sides have had face-to-face meetings or negotiations or published a series of bilateral political documents, clearly agreeing that the two countries should resolve their disputes peacefully through direct negotiations."

China and the Philippines were among the countries that signed the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea in 2002.

All the signatories agreed to solve disputes through dialog and consultations.

The Philippines' incoming president Rodrigo Duterte has said that he wanted to cultivate friendly relations with China.

He confirmed that he was open to direct talks over the row in the South China Sea, which had damaged bilateral relations.
