The concept of 'big data' is being discussed at a five-day summit in the southwestern Chinese province of Guizhou. One of the major areas of concern among those taking part in the massive event in the provincial capital, Guiyang, is data protection. Ma Huateng is the CEO of Chinese internet giant Tencent. "One of Tencent's big data centers, the largest of its kind in Asia, was only one and a half kilometers from the Tianjin blast site last year. The center suffered significant damage in the explosions. This was the first time a massive data center of this kind was left unattended. So the incident rang alarm bells for us." Chinese authorities are warning that online attacks from overseas are posing a significant threat to China's big data industry. Qi Xiangdong, head of Chinese internet security firm Qihoo 360, says threats against China's internet system continue to roll in. "Last year, we detected a hacker organization named OceanLotus, which had been launching elaborately organized online attacks on China. The attacks continued for around 3-years. This is a major concern, and shows big data security needs to be a priority." Over 20-thousand 'big data' industry leaders and experts from around 300 companies are represented at this year's summits in Guizhou. |
