A Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Wednesday expressed firm opposition to separatist propositions of "Taiwan independence."

"The International community has been widely pursuing the one-China policy," said spokesperson Hua Chunying at a daily press briefing.

According to media reports, Taiwan's new leader Tsai Ing-wen addressed the island's new representative to the United States as "ambassador" on Monday.

In both diplomatic practice and international law, only sovereign entities, which Taiwan is not, send "ambassadors" to foreign countries.

Taiwan can only have unofficial relations with the United States, so the status of its agencies in the United States and their people in charge is very clear, said Hua.

We firmly oppose any practice of creating "two Chinas," "One-China, one Taiwan" and "Taiwan independence," she said.

"We hope that relevant countries will continue to stick to the one-China policy and refrain from allowing Taiwan agencies and their personnel to conduct activities incompatible with their status," she said.
