Chinese authorities are taking steps to allow this country's academics in the field of science to take up to 3-year sabbatical to pursue research outside their campus or institution. The State Council, China's cabinet, announcing the move as a way to turn simple academic research into technological innovations. Chinese Deputy-Minister of Science and Technology, Wang Zhigang, says Chinese researchers need not fear losing their jobs if they want to pursue work outside their institution. "If after three years if they somehow fail to achieve anything significant outside and decide to go back to their campus, they will still be professors. If somehow they are successful in turning their research into real products, they can also choose to become entrepreneurs. For many people, it really takes lots of courage and determination to leave their institutes. These actions should be supported by concrete government policies." The gap between pure research and their application in the real-world is viewed by many Chinese scientists as a major barrier for an innovation-driven economy in China. It’s estimated only around 10-percent of all academic research at Chinese universities and institutes ends up becoming a real-world application. |
