China has vowed to work with Afghanistan to promote a strategic partnership of cooperation. The pledge came as President Xi Jinping met with visiting Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah in Beijing on Tuesday. President Xi thanked Afghanistan for its support on issues concerning China's core interests, adding that China will continue to respect the political system and the development path chosen by the Afghan people. He called on enhanced bilateral coordination to push ahead China's major investment projects in the country. The president also expressed willingness to intensify high-level exchanges with Afghanistan and map out a future cooperation plan. Moreover, Beijing has vowed to continue providing Kabul with security-building assistance to fight terrorism and support its peaceful reconciliation process. For his part, Abdullah said his country would like to implement the consensus reached by both sides and enhance cooperation with China in a variety of fields including economy, infrastructure and security. Speaking during an interview with China Radio International, Abdullah praised China's assistance and support to Afghanistan during its hardest times. "China is an important neighbor of Afghanistan and has great influence on global issues as a key world power. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has vowed efforts on resolving Afghanistan issues with the international community, and we expressed our appreciation and gratitude." China has always backed the inclusive process of Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation, which is regarded as the fundamental way for Afghanistan to realize long-term peace and stability. Abudullah also expressed willingness to take part in the One Belt and One Road Initiative, since it could provide more opportunities for developing bilateral strategic partnership between the two sides. "The Belt and Road Initiative will positively affect not only Afghanistan but also the whole region in a variety of areas including communication, transportation and interconnectivity. During our talks, we also discussed a railway construction project which will bring benefits for Afghanistan and the region's economic development." Abdullah Abdullah kicked off his four-day official visit to China on Sunday at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. In addition to Beijing, the tour will take him to Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. |
