China's State Council has decided on a push for product development at the country's public museums and other cultural institutions. A meeting held on April 27th highlighted the vast resources currently held by these institutions, including museums, galleries and libraries, and urged these institutions to better capitalize on these resources and promote China's traditional culture through commercial product development. Fan Zhou, chief of the Cultural Development Research Institute of Communication University of China, said these non-profit organizations should explore creative and innovative ways to promote the cultural relics they hold, along with their historic significance. Fan said these cultural relics will not only improve the quality of services at these establishments but will also introduce Chinese cultures to the world. A number of Chinese cultural enterprises and institutions have already begun developing products based on their collections, such as souvenirs and tourism-related services. These moves have stimulated consumption in related sectors and helped to popularize their collections. However, experts have pointed to difficulties lying ahead, such as a lack of stimulus policies and innovative abilities. The meeting last week decided to choose a set of national museums, galleries and libraries to test some pilot projects. The projects will facilitate independent and joint product development at these institutions, utilizing the cultural resources they hold and collect. |
