An alleged attack on a woman at a hotel in Beijing is generating a lot of buzz here in China. Home-Inns Hotel Group has been forced to issue a public apology amid the surfacing of a video showing a woman being accosted by a man at one of the company's hotels in northeastern Beijing on Sunday evening. The woman claims the man followed her to her room, and then tried to attack her. She claims hotel staff failed to stop the attack, despite her pleas for help. A video of the attack appears to show the attacker was only stopped after other hotel guests stepped in. The attacker himself remains on the loose. Professor Li Chunhua with the Public Security University of China says the incident is a sign hotels need to do more to enhance their security. "Beyond monitoring all public areas with security cameras, security staff should patrol the public areas. If they are able to patrol, they will be able to intervene in a situation like this one, even if it involves family members, so that an investigation can be launched." The Home-inns Hotel Group says it is now working with police in the investigation to determine exactly what took place, as there are questions being raised about whether the incident could have been staged to damage the hotel's corporate reputation. The company recently completed a merger with another hotel chain. |
