Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann will pay a state visit to China from Thursday to Saturday at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He said during an interview on Tuesday that Switzerland and China will strengthen their ties in science and the economy.

"The main purpose is to strengthen the ties between the two countries in foremost our science and economic domains. We are going to discuss business; we are going to discuss how to even better establish the free trade agreement, where can we improve, where can we adjust, how can we prepare even more attractive market access both ways."

The Swiss President said Switzerland and China have shared a good relationship for many years and that he was very proud that Switzerland was the first to acknowledge the People's Republic of China as opening out to the western hemisphere.

He added Switzerland also was participating positively in the establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

"I am so happy to say that we have found over the years in our Chinese friends real partners, real challenges. President Xi Jinping invited me, demonstrated from his side that the relationships between the huge China and the tiny, nice paradise Switzerland are of importance."

He also said that the two sides would discuss cooperation in vocational education.

This will be Schneider-Ammann's first visit to China after being elected as President in 2015.
