Environmentalists are racing against time to clean up oil leaking from the stricken container ship TS Taipei.

The vessel lost power and ran aground off New Taipei City on March 10.

In the two weeks since then, 35 tons of diesel and more than 200 tons of heavy oil were drained from the ship's oil tank.

However, there are still about 300 tons of fuel and 392 cargo containers on board, as well as nine containers with lubricant and toxic chemicals inside.

The polluted coastline extends up to two kilometers or more.

Workers in protective gear have been using buckets and solvents to remove oil from the shore.

Local people were concerned that the leaked oil might damage the local ecological system, as the coast of New Taipei City contributes more than 80 percent of the fish caught in the area.

The shipowner is hoping to send 10 workers to check-over the tilted ship, and to drain fuel if the weather conditions allow.
