Chinese President Xi Jinping's trip this week to the Czech Republic is expected to see him oversee the signing of more than 20 different agreements. The trip itself is being dubbed historic, as it will be the first time a Chinese President has visited either the Czech Republic or the former Czechoslovakia since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949. Jiang Yi with Chinese Academy of Social Sciences says any historical differences the two countries have had are now a thing of the past. "Though the relationship between the two countries went through some ups and downs in the past, relations between the Czech Republic and China have developed smoothly recently. The two sides have reached a consensus in terms of political principles and financial cooperation. With the launch of Belt and Road Initiative by China, the Czech Republic is poised to become a hub for cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries." China and the former Czechoslovakia adopted diplomatic ties shortly after the founding of the PRC in 1949. The release of a joint declaration on a strategic partnership is expected to be the main outcome of Xi Jinping's visit this time. |
