Chinese authorities are pleading with all sides to tamp-down the rhetoric surrounding the Korean peninsula. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei has made the call after North Korea fired a pair of ballistic missiles off its east coast, as well as announcing that it plans to cut all economic ties with South Korea. He says, "Given the current complicated and sensitive situation on the Korean Peninsula, each side should stop making any provocative remarks and actions so as to avoid escalating tensions. This is in line with the common interests of all sides." In cutting economic ties with South Korea, Pyongyang says any South Korean assets left in North Korea are going to be liquidated. South Korean companies ran operations out of the joint Kaesong Industrial Complex on the North Korean side of the border. That facility was vacated by South Korea earlier this year after North Korea's latest nuclear test. North Korea is being hit with a new round of sanctions in response to its nuclear test and ballistic missile launches. |
