Chinese President Xi Jinping has sat down with lawmakers from Hunan to discuss rural development strategies.

Hunan is the province with the largest number of people living under the poverty line.

Xi Jinping says the push to reform the Chinese economy through the elimination of outdated industries is something that needs to happen in Hunan.

"Advancing supply-side structural reforms is a tough battle. And we realize it's necessary to keep a balance between maintaining economic growth by increasing output. But on the other hand, we also have to get rid of non-effective and low-end companies. We need to boost productivity by expanding medium-to-high-end output."

Hunan, located in central China, is one of China's main agricultural centers.

This year's "Number One Central Document," which focuses on agriculture, is suggesting 'supply-side reforms' are going to address issues of overcapacity in the agriculture sector.

While grain production increased this past year, government officials are pointing to 'supply-side' problems which led to a marked increase in agricultural imports this past year.
