The actor's performance in the movie involved him plunging into icy waters and eating raw bison to survive in the wilderness after a bear attack.DiCaprio received a standing ovation as he picked up the award. On accepting the award, the actor made his speech graciously while highlighting an issue close to his heart -- global warming. "Climate change is real, it is the most urgent threat facing our species. And we need to work collectively to stop procrastinating on it. Thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take our planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so very much." This is the first victory for the 41-year-old Dicaprio at the awards show after having been nominated five times for acting Oscars, dating back to 1993's "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." Alejandro Inarritu also won the best director Oscar for this survival epic movie. The American biographical crime drama film "Spotlight" which recreates the Boston Globe's probe into sex abuse in the Catholic Church, won best picture, the highest honor in the film industry. Brie Larson was named best actress for "Room", while Mark Rylance and Alicia Vikander won best supporting acting awards for their impressive performances in "Bridge of Spies" and "The Danish Girl" respectively. The best original song went to Sam Smith's "Writing's On the Wall" in "Spectre", upsetting Lady Gaga and songwriter Diane Warren's anti-rape ballad "Til It Happens To You" from the documentary "The Hunting Ground." Other winners at this year's award ceremony include "Inside Out" for best animated film and late singer Amy Winehouse for best feature documentary. |
