The first patient in China diagnosed with the Zika virus has been discharged from hospital in Jiangxi. Doctors at the Ganxian County hospital say the 34-year-old man is no longer showing Zika symptoms, and is testing negative for the virus. "The nucleic acid tests of the patient's blood and urine all show negative results. We've reported the results to disease control authorities at the city and provincial levels. They have since passed on the information to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, which has allowed the patient to be discharged from hospital." The patient developed a fever, headache and dizziness on January 28th while traveling in Venezuela. He then returned to China on February 5th via Hong Kong and Shenzhen. He was admitted to hospital the next day, and was confirmed with the Zika virus 3-days later. So far, the mosquito-borne virus has affected more than 30 countries around the world. The virus, which began re-emerging in South America late last year, is being blamed for an increasing number of microcephaly cases, in which an infant's head is significantly smaller than normal. The World Health Organization says it could be a year-and-a-half before any large-scale clinical trials of a Zika vaccine may take place. |
