Editor's note: Shadow play, also known as shadow puppetry, is a traditional folk art in China. It is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which uses flat articulated figures (shadow puppets) to create cut-out figures which are held between a source of light and a translucent screen or scrim. Various effects can be achieved by moving both the puppets and the light source. Shadow play was registered in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2011. As the Year of the Monkey draws near, a puppetry troupe from Luoyang, Henan Province, performs scenes from the traditional play "The Monkey King" for local people. ![]() A shadow puppetry troupe from Luoyang in Henan Province performs scenes from the classical Chinese shadow play "The Monkey King" for local people on Jan. 24, 2016.
