Character actor Abe Vigoda died on Tuesday at the age of 94.

His daughter confirmed the news, saying he had died in his sleep at her home.

Thanks to characters including Detective Phil Fish in the 1970s TV series "Barney Miller" and a doomed Mafia soldier in "The Godfather," the actor was well known worldwide.

The 1972 Oscar-winning "The Godfather" along with its sequel, made Vigoda recognizable to the general public and led to numerous roles.

The actor achieved a rare television feat, appearing in the sitcom Barney Miller and his own spinoff show, Fish, while still appearing in the cast of the original show.
