China's service sector saw a slight rise last month on soft client demand.

Caixin's reading of the Purchasing Managers' Index or PMI clocked in at 50.2 in December, lower than November's level of 51.2.

A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while one below 50 indicates contraction.

The Caixin/Markit report says that December data pointed to a slowdown in the growth of China's service sector, with business activity and new orders rising only marginally at the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the manufacturing PMI posted at 48.2 last month, lower than November's 48.6, and also a reading below the 50-point mark for the 10th month.

Caixin says that the contraction was due to weaker demand both domestically and internationally.

Such a contrast is seen by economists as a sign of the preliminary effects of China's economic restructuring, which focuses more on the service sector while aiming to reduce overcapacity in the industrial sector.
