Whether you’re sipping rich eggnog by the fire, enjoying crisp Prosecco at the office Christmas party or swigging warming whisky out of a hipflask on Boxing Day, Christmas isn’t Christmas without a drink in hand every step of the way.

So here are our 12 drinks of Christmas, from the perfect Christmas Eve cocktail to the ultimate Boxing Day morning-after cure, to help you plan your festive drinks menu.

    Bottoms up!

    1. Carol Singing Sauce

The festive season doesn’t begin in earnest until someone sporting a Father Christmas hat thrusts a steaming hot mug of mulled wine into your face.

Wine is terrifically easy to mull yourself. First build the syrup by bubbling 200g of sugar with the juice and peel of one orange, the peel of a lemon, a few cloves, a cinnamon stick, some nutmeg gratings and just enough red wine to cover the top. Once it’s boiled and thickened, tip in two bottles of Italian red wine. Add one star anise and orange and apple segments and leave on a low heat (don’t let it boil!) until ready to serve.

    2.Christmas Eve Cocktails

‘Yoghurt-based cocktails are huge in the States at the moment,’ says M&S Product Developer for Drinks Jenny Rea. ’And this one, poured over ice with a lemon twist, will really get you in the mood for Christmas. Plus the beautiful white bottle has a holographic label, so it works really well as a gift.

    3.Santa’s Snifter

You’ve made it home just in time to leave a mince pie for Father Christmas and a plate of carrots for his reindeer. Brandy’s always a winner, or you could pour the beardy old fella something really special this year: a glass of Marks & Spencer’s pre-mixed Mince Pie Martini cocktail.

    4. Christmas Morning Fizz

The big day is here! And it’s going to be a long one. So line your stomach sensibly: with a Bucks Fizz. (We think of it as orange juice with superpowers.)

The clementines make it really seasonal, and it’s only 4% alcohol. This means it’s light enough to enjoy early in the morning while unwrapping presents, without leaving you too tipsy before lunch. And it goes wonderfully with a smoked salmon breakfast.

    5. Drinks for the Designated Driver

Poor sod, but someone’s got to do it. So let’s all treat our valiant teetotallers to something more exciting than another ruddy glass of diet cola this year.

How about a non-alcoholic elderflower and mint cocktail? Just mix fizzy elderflower with mint leaves and serve with .
