The appointment of a former Olympic table tennis champion as an adjunct professor at a Chinese university is stirring up controversy.

This is because of questions surrounding Deng Yaping's appointment and academic qualifications for the job at the China University of Political Science and Law.

However, the university has backed its decision made early this month, saying a proper recruitment process has been followed.

The school says Deng has been given the position to support the school's varsity table tennis team and forge a vibrant sports culture on campus.

However, an undergrad at the university is calling on school authorities to disclose their decision-making process, arguing an academic board should have been convened publicly to vote.

Another professor at the University has also quit in protest of Deng's appointment.

Deng Yaping became the first Chinese athlete to win four Olympic gold medals.

After retiring from the national team, she acquired a number of academic distinctions, including her PhD from the University of Cambridge.
