Authorities in the western Chinese metropolis of Chongqing are now discussing the idea of creating a Municipality-wide 2.5-day weekend this coming summer.

Under the plan, government institutions, state-owned companies, joint-ventures and privately-held companies would be given incentives to allow their workers to take off at noon on Friday before coming back to the office on Monday.

"I think it's a good idea, as there are many more people commuting on Friday, and the traffic is usually very crowded."

"Each unit has its own conditions and rules, so I don't think it's feasible to have 2.5 days off."It's unclear at this point whether the proposal in Chongqing will be implemented next summer.

A nation-wide two-day weekend policy was set into law in China in 1995.
