The mini wave originated with beauty pageant contestants in the Miss Universe pageant, but has been made popular in Asia by the AlDub characters (played by Filipino actors Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza) from the seriesEat Bulaga. Since then a whole host of people – from staff at the US Embassy in Manilla to actor Vin Diesel and singer Taylor Swift– have joined in the fun. The term is now used as a gesture of friendly greeting not only by Filipinos but by many in various parts of the world.
