Greek authorities are now trying to cope with an influx of refugees who have discovered a new path into European territory.

Close to 2-thousand migrants, most of them from Syria, have found their way to the resort island of Lesbos this past week.

Avoiding the potentially deadly voyage from North Africa across the Mediterranean, groups of refugees are now packing themselves onto small dinghies or other make-shift rafts to cross from Turkey into Greek territory.

"We came from Syria. From Syria we went to Turkey and then came to Greece. After Greece we want to go to Germany, God willing. And we want to stay there."

The island of Lesbos lies just 5-kilometers off the Turkish mainland.

The small resort island is reportedly struggling to cope with the migrant influx, with an average of 300 people a day making it to Lesbos.

Greek authorities are increasing calls for more European help to deal with the situation.

An estimated 46-thousand refugees have already landed on Greek shores this year, a figure which has already surpassed the whole of last year.
