The solar-powered airplane Solar Impulse 2 arrived in Nanjing on Tuesday night, April 21, 2015, after 17 hours of flying.

The plane took off at 6:06 a.m. in Chongqing after parking in Chongqing for three weeks due to crosswinds along the flight route, which could have been damaging to the plane.

The aircraft landed in Chongqing last month after 20 hours of flight from Myanmar.

The single-seater aircraft has no fuel on board and weighs around the same as a car.

The 17,000 solar cells built into its wings supply the Solar Impule's four electric motors with renewable energy.

It is expected to stop in 12 locations around the world.

Swiss airmen Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg are co-piloting the aircraft in an attempt to complete the first around-the-world solar flight.

The journey started on March 9 from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Before it landed in Mandalay, the aircraft had stopped in Muscat, Oman, and the Indian city's of Ahmedabad and Varanasi.

It's scheduled to be completed in five months. However, the delay in Chongqing is likely to push that schedule back.

From Nanjing, the two pilots will face one of the biggest challenges of their journey - crossing the Pacific Ocean before they arrive in the U.S. state of Hawaii.
