The solar-powered airplane Solar Impulse took off at 6:05 a.m., April 21, 2015, in Chongqing and is now heading for Nanjing. It is expected to arrive in Nanjing Tuesday night.

The plane has been parked in Chongqing for three weeks due to crosswinds along the flight route that could be damaging to the plane.

It landed in Chongqing last month after 20 hours of flight from Myanmar.

The single-seater aircraft has no fuel on board and weighs around the same as a car.

The 17,000 solar cells built into the wings supply four electric motors with renewable energy.

It is expected to stop in 12 locations around the world.

Swiss men Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg are co-piloting the aircraft in an attempt to complete the first around-the-world solar flight.

The journey started on March 9 from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Before it landed in Mandalay, the aircraft had stopped in Muscat in Oman, and Ahmedabad and Varanasi in India.

From Nanjing, the two pilots will face one of the biggest challenges of their journey - crossing the Pacific Ocean before they arrive in Hawaii.
