A former mayor in southwest China's Guizhou Province stood trial on Thursday for taking huge bribes and holding huge properties with unidentified sources.

Prosecutors accused Hong Jinzhou, former mayor of Kaili City, of accepting bribes totalling more than 40 million yuan (6.5 million U.S. dollars) between 1997 and 2013 to seek benefits for others.

Hong was also charged with being unable to account for the sources of his property totalling 31 million yuan, according to the Guiyang Intermediate People's Court.

He also served posts such as deputy county government head, economic development and industrial park zones' directors and deputy head of Qiandongnan prefectural government during the period.

In another case, Shu Xi, former Communist Party boss of Hongjiang City in the central Hunan Province, was put on trial on Monday and Tuesday at a court in Hunan.

Shu was accused of taking bribes totalling 7.7 million yuan between 2005 and 2013, and holding property of 18 million yuan with unidentified sources.

The courts have not issued verdicts for the two defendants.
