A southwest China court on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for an arson attack that left six dead on a bus last year.

The Guiyang Intermediate People's Court in Guiyang, Guizhou's capital, also deprived Su Dahua of his political rights for life, after he was convicted of arson and causing malicious injury to others, the court said in a statement.

On Feb. 27, 2014, Su set a bus ablaze with gasoline following a family dispute. Fire engulfed the crowded bus as it passed a primary school, killing six and leaving more than 30 injured.

Su was also given a one-year sentence for causing injuries to a man suspected of having an affair with his wife in August 2013.

Su pleaded guilty and said he would not appeal.

China has seen a series of cases in which arsonists have taken revenge on society at large for purely personal issues.

In 2013, an attack on a bus in the eastern city of Xiamen left 47 people dead and 34 others injured. Notes found in the suspect's house showed that he was depressed and planned the attack to vent unrelated personal grievances.
