Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen called his Bird's Nest experience four years ago "great" at a press conference here on Wednesday.

"I was in China for the Beijing Olympics at the Bird's Nest stadium, which gave me a great experience," he said.

The Bird's Nest, the famous 80,000-capacity stadium, will play host to Arsenal's pre-season game with Manchester City on Friday.

"That time, I was here for the Olympics with the Belgian national team," he said. "We travelled all over the country, not just Beijing, and it was also the first time I had been to the country. We had a great tournament too and won a medal.

"We didn't play in the Bird's Nest, but I went to the stadium to watch athletics, and it was a great experience. It looks fantastic, and I think the atmosphere will be great as well."

Arsenal will take on Manchester City on Friday, the same day that the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony will take place in London.

Vermaelen won't be competing at the Olympics this year, but he plans to watch some action.

"I like table tennis, I like to play a bit myself, and I know the Chinese are very good at it, so I will try to watch that. And of course I will watch the football tournament too," he said.
