This northern famous shadow play which was first seen during the Qing Dynasty went through many generations' of inheritance. Sixty-seven year old Yu Jiuwen is an artist of Heilongjiang shadow play. He entered the Heilongjiang Province puppet shadow art theatre to learn shadow art when he was sixteen years old. From then on, he had a tight relationship with shadow play. He can write, direct, perform, sing, and produce shadows by himself, and he has done so for more than 50 years come rain or shine. After he retired in 2005, he developed cartoon character shadows and set up a workroom in the Art Department of Harbin Normal University Music Conservatory. More than 40 postgraduate and undergraduate students in his department began to systematically learn the techniques of the shadow play. Yu Jiuwen’s shadow character works have won grand prizes many times in national and provincial exhibitions. The works have seen good sales in France, Germany, Japan and other countries.
