The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Wednesday called on the public to support the efforts of the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) amidst rising humanitarian needs of survivors from an earthquake that struck the Ya'an area of Sichuan province in southwestern China.

IFRC said the RCSC currently has a response team of over 400 staff and volunteers working in Lushan County and nearby districts that are severely-affected and have distributed relief items such as food, drinking water, tents and quilts to thousands of survivors.

It added that Red Cross volunteers have also been playing a vital role in search and rescue efforts as well as providing medical care and psychosocial support to the injured.

IFRC urged the public to support RCSC in its actions to help survivors of the earthquake that has claimed the lives of nearly 200 people.
