For the fifth time, Rock in Rio, the world's largest music festival, will kick off here Friday, with 250,000 people expected during the five-day event.

Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz, Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams are among the singers and bands who will take part in the performances of the 2012 edition of Rock in Rio Lisbon.

Other than music, the festival offers entertainment. "We want (the festival) to be a Disneyland of music," festival director and founder Roberto Medina said.

Though Portugal is still struggling with the effects of the eurozone debt crisis, the organizers want people to pay more to visit the festival. In 2010, the price of a one-day ticket was 58 euros (72.5 U.S. dollars), and now it is 63 euros (78.7 U.S. dollars).

"We believe that people will be more choosy regarding how they are going to spend their money, and we make an effort to offer quality, so we will be one choice of the Portuguese," Medina said.

Rock in Rio originated in Brazil in 1985. After its third edition in Rio de Janeiro, the festival expanded in 2004 to Lisbon, where it has an edition every two years. Since 2008, two editions have also been held in Madrid.
